What is VMMC?

Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) is the complete surgical removal of the foreskin. It’s a one-time primary prevention intervention that reduces the risk of HIV transmission from women to men by 60 percent.

Who is eligible for circumcision?

VMMC can be carried out at any age. But the World Health Organization recommends VMMC for boys aged 15 years and older and men. It is particularly recommended for males at higher risk of HIV infection.

Who should perform the procedure

Circumcision should always be done by a trained health professional in a clinical setting. Traditional circumcision carried out by a traditional healer or religious leader is often poorly performed. This means it doesn’t have the same HIV risk reduction.  At Westlane Medical Centre, we have our own theatre, recovery room, doctors and nursing staff dedicated to providing our VMMC service.

How long before I can have sex after circumcision?

Your healthcare provider will tell you how long you should wait to have sex after you are circumcised. It is usually about six weeks.

Are there other methods of preventing HIV?

Yes,  in addition to VMMC you can enrol for PREP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) to prevent sero-conversion to HIV incase your partner is HIV positive.
